Nestled on the forested slopes of Mount Song — one of China’s Five Sacred Mountains — Shaolin Temple stands as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the very heart of a tradition that has shaped history, culture, and philosophy for over 1,500 years. Founded in 495 AD, it is here that Zen Buddhism first took root in China, and where the art of Kung Fu evolved from simple health exercises into a complete way of life — one that unites physical strength, mental focus, and inner peace.

“True strength comes from discipline; true peace comes from within.”

— Traditional Shaolin Proverb

At Gigway Travel, we do not just arrange visits — we invite you to walk the path of the monks. This is more than a tour; it is a journey into the soul of Chinese martial arts, where every stone, every tree, and every movement holds a story of endurance, wisdom, and harmony.

⛰️ The Sacred Grounds of Mount Song

Mount Song, one of China’s Five Sacred Mountains, has sheltered Shaolin Temple for over 1,500 years.
Mount Song, one of China’s Five Sacred Mountains, has sheltered Shaolin Temple for over 1,500 years.

Mount Song rises from the wide plains of central Henan — a rugged range of sharp peaks, deep valleys, and ancient forests. The air here smells of pine, wild herbs, and sandalwood incense, and time seems to move at a slower, more peaceful pace.

As you travel toward the temple, you pass small farming villages built from stone and timber, their courtyards opening onto terraced fields where wheat and millet have grown for centuries. Life here still follows the rhythm of the seasons — quiet, steady, and deeply connected to the land.

Wildlife and nature thrive in these protected hills. If you walk the quieter trails, you may catch sight of golden pheasants flashing their bright plumage, squirrels darting up ancient cypresses, and hawks circling high above the ridges. In spring, the slopes bloom with pink and white blossoms; in autumn, the forest turns to shades of amber and crimson.

“Mount Song holds the essence of the earth; Shaolin holds the spirit of China.”
— Ancient Chinese Saying

It was here that Zen Buddhism and Shaolin Kung Fu first grew side by side — born from meditation and discipline.

The Legend: How Zen and Kung Fu Became One

To understand Shaolin, you have to understand its story. It began in the 5th century, when an Indian monk named Bodhidharma arrived at the temple. Finding the monks physically weak from long hours of sitting meditation, he taught them breathing exercises and gentle movements to strengthen their bodies and clear their minds.

Over hundreds of years, these simple forms grew into a vast system of martial arts — not for fighting, but for self‑defence, health, and spiritual growth. Kung Fu at Shaolin is never just about power; it is about control: control of your breath, your thoughts, and your actions. Every strike, stance, and leap follows the natural flow of water, wind, and trees — turning the body into an extension of the mind. The secret of Shaolin: the harder you train, the calmer you become.

What You Will See & Feel

Walk through gates that have welcomed seekers and warriors for more than a millennium.
As you step through the temple gates, you enter a world far from the rush of modern life. Ancient halls with curved, golden‑glazed roofs stand beneath towering cypresses. Inside, murals line the walls, telling tales of monks who defended the temple in times of war, and masters who achieved such focus they could break stone with a single blow.

🪦 Pagoda Forest

The Pagoda Forest is the final resting place of generations of Shaolin masters — each tower tells its own story of wisdom and achievement.

A short walk from the main complex lies the Pagoda Forest, the largest ancient monk cemetery in China. Each stone structure marks the resting place of a revered abbot or master, its shape and carvings reflecting their life and contributions. Walking here, you feel history not as something written in books, but as something alive in the quiet air.

🧘 Bodhidharma Cave

Higher up the mountain, along stone paths winding through pine woods, sits Bodhidharma Cave. Legend says the great master sat here for nine years until his shadow was etched into the rock itself. It is a place of deep silence, where you can pause and feel the stillness that gave birth to Zen.

🥋 Live Kung Fu Demonstrations

Every movement is meditation in motion — a perfect blend of speed, grace, and inner calm.
Every movement is meditation in motion — a perfect blend of speed, grace, and inner calm.

No visit is complete without the daily shows. Masters move with lightning speed yet perfect control, breaking wooden planks, leaping high, and handling weapons with the ease of a painter holding a brush. It is not just acrobatics — it is the living philosophy of Shaolin.

“I have travelled across China and seen many historic sites, but Shaolin stands apart. I’ve walked its ancient courtyards, sat in the quiet of Bodhidharma Cave, watched masters move like water and wind, and tasted the simple, nourishing vegetarian food. It is a place that stays with you — calm, powerful, and deeply inspiring.”
