Tianmen Skygate: Where Heaven Meets Earth in Zhangjiajie.

Updated: Jun 12

A Natural Wonder Carved by Time

Tianmen Skygate is a colossal natural opening carved right through the heart of Tianmen Mountain, shaped over millions of years by the patient force of wind, water, and geological change. Measuring approximately 131 meters high, 57 meters wide, and 60 meters deep, this immense archway looks exactly like a giant gate cut straight into the sky — which is why it has been revered for centuries as the “Gate to the Heavens.”

This name reflects the deep local belief that the arch serves as a sacred passage, connecting the mortal world below with the divine realm above.

Its location only adds to the magic and mystery. Perched 1,300 meters above sea level, the Skygate is surrounded by swirling white mists, steep lush green cliffs, and jagged peaks that define the iconic Zhangjiajie landscape. On clear, bright days, sunlight streams directly through the arch, casting dramatic golden beams across the valley floor. When clouds roll in and fog gathers, the gate appears to float weightlessly in the mist — creating an ethereal, almost otherworldly scene that feels far beyond the reach of everyday life.

The Journey to Tianmen Skygate

Reaching the Skygate is not just travel — it is an adventure in itself. Every part of the journey offers breathtaking views and a sense of discovery, building anticipation until you finally stand before the great archway. You have several ways to travel up, down, and around the mountain, suited to every preference and ability:

🚠 The Cable Car Ride

One of the most unforgettable experiences here is the famous Tianmen Mountain Cable Car. Stretching over 7.4 kilometers long, it is among the longest cable car lines in the world. It carries visitors smoothly from the city level all the way to the mountain summit, gliding high above deep valleys, dense ancient forests, and towering rock formations. As you climb, the scenery shifts dramatically from urban landscape to wild, untamed nature — offering sweeping panoramic views that prepare you perfectly for the grandeur waiting at the top.

🚌 The 99 Bends Road & Mountain Shuttle Buses

For those who prefer traveling by road, the mountain highway is an engineering masterpiece. Known as the Road of 99 Bends, it winds steeply upward with exactly 99 sharp, hairpin turns along its route. The number 9 holds very special meaning in Chinese culture — it symbolizes good luck, eternity, and imperial power — making this journey as rich in cultural significance as it is stunning in scenery.

Once you arrive at the mountain transfer stations, comfortable shuttle buses connect all key areas: from the cable car station to the road terminus, and from the base of the steps or escalators right around the summit loop. These buses run frequently, making it easy to move between viewpoints, trails, and attractions without any long walks.

🪜 The Stairway to Heaven — OR — The Escalator Option

Whether you arrive by cable car or road, you reach the final approach to the Skygate.

  • The Stairway to Heaven: A total of 999 stone steps leading directly up to the base of the arch. The number 999 is deeply symbolic, representing longevity, immortality, and infinite blessing. The climb is steady and challenging, but every step brings you higher, closer, and more deeply immersed in the landscape — until you finally stand beneath the great arch, with the wide sky open above you.

  • ✅ The Escalator — No Walking Required!

If you prefer not to climb, or simply want a relaxed, effortless journey, you can take the series of covered, outdoor escalators that run parallel to the stairs. These gentle, moving walkways carry you smoothly all the way up to the Skygate viewing platform. It is a comfortable, scenic, and time-saving option — perfect for families, seniors, or anyone who wants to save energy to enjoy the views. You still get the same incredible perspective, but without the effort of climbing.

✨ The Glass Skywalk

For travelers seeking an extra thrill and a truly unique perspective, the cliff-edge Glass Skywalks are unmissable. These transparent paths are built right along the steep mountain face, suspended hundreds of meters above the valley floor. Walking here feels exactly like walking on air — you look down through clear glass to the trees and peaks far below, while enjoying unobstructed, stunning views of the mountain’s dramatic shape and the Skygate itself. The walkways are carefully designed, maintained, and completely safe, but the sensation is absolutely heart-pounding and unforgettable.

A Global Stage for Extreme Sports

Beyond its beauty and history, Tianmen Skygate has earned worldwide fame as a premier destination for extreme sports and daring challenges. Its towering cliffs, vast open space, and that unique natural arch create the ultimate dramatic backdrop — turning nature’s grand masterpiece into a stage for human courage and skill.

It has hosted legendary international competitions, including:

  • Wingsuit Flying, where expert pilots dive and soar at incredible speed, navigating directly through the opening of the Skygate itself.

  • High-altitude bungee jumping, leaping from the cliffs above the clouds.

  • Downhill mountain biking, racing down the steep winding roads and trails.

Every event here draws athletes and spectators from every corner of the globe, united by the thrill of seeing what is possible when human ambition meets the power of nature.

Cultural and Spiritual Significance

Tianmen Skygate is far more than just a spectacular natural landmark — it holds deep, living cultural and spiritual meaning. For generations, local people have regarded this arch as a sacred gateway: the place where the earthly realm meets the heavens. This belief brings a sense of reverence and peace to the site, making it a place not only for sightseeing, but also for quiet reflection and respect.

The wider mountain area is dotted with ancient temples, shrines, and pavilions, built over centuries to honour this holy place. Visitors can explore these sites, learn about the spiritual traditions tied to the mountain, and find quiet, peaceful spots to rest and absorb the atmosphere during their visit.

The Fox Spirit Theatre at the Mountain Foot

At the very base of Tianmen Mountain, right below the great slopes, lies an impressive open-air venue — The Fox Spirit Theatre — purpose-built as the exclusive stage for the world-famous performance The Fox.

Here, the towering mountain and the majestic Skygate itself form the magnificent, natural backdrop for the show. The performance blends powerful music, graceful dance, acrobatics, and ancient local folklore into a magical, immersive experience. With the cliffs, Skygate Cave, and peaks rising behind the stage, the landscape itself becomes part of the storytelling — making every show feel like a performance blessed by the mountains and skies above.

Practical Tips for Visitors

⏱️ How Many Days Do You Need?

  • 1 full day (approx. 8–9 hours) is perfectly enough to experience all key highlights: the cable car ride, summit viewpoints, shuttle bus loops, the escalator or stairs to the Skygate, and the open-air theatre at the foot of the mountain.

  • 1.5 days is ideal if you prefer to take your time, enjoy photography without rushing, or explore at a relaxed pace. There is no need for a longer stay to see everything this site has to offer.

♿ Wheelchair Accessibility

Tianmen Skygate is partially accessible, with good access to most major areas, though some sections remain challenging:

Fully accessible areas: Entrance plaza, ticket hall, cable car, shuttle buses, main summit roads, viewing platforms, the escalator to the Skygate, and The Fox Spirit Theatre at the foot of the mountain. All these areas are flat, paved, or mechanically assisted, and easy to navigate, with staff available to assist with boarding.

Not accessible: The 999 steps leading up directly to the Skygate (steep stairs only, no ramps or lifts), as well as the Glass Skywalk and narrow cliff-side paths, which include steps and have limited space.

Summary: You can comfortably enjoy around 80% of the attraction, including the most spectacular views and the famous open-air theatre, even if you use a wheelchair or have limited mobility.

🌤️ Best Time to Visit

  • Spring and Autumn offer the clearest skies, vibrant green scenery, and comfortable temperatures.

  • Early mornings give you the best chance to see the arch shrouded in soft mist — creating that magical “floating in the clouds” effect that makes Tianmen famous.

  • Summer is lush and green, though busier; winter brings snow-covered peaks for a truly magical, quiet atmosphere.

🥾 What to Wear

  • Comfortable walking shoes with good grip are essential — especially if you plan to walk any trails or visit the skywalks.

  • Layered clothing works best: temperatures can drop significantly at higher altitudes, and conditions can change quickly from warm sun to cool mist.

⚠️ Safety

  • Always follow safety instructions and stay within marked paths on the skywalks and stairways.

  • Paths and glass surfaces can be slippery when wet — take extra care during or after rain.

🎟️ Tickets and Access

  • Purchase tickets in advance during peak seasons to avoid long waits. (Note: Tickets are included in our travel packages for your convenience.)

  • The cable car operates daily but may close temporarily during severe weather or strong winds for safety.

  • Shuttle buses and escalators run continuously during opening hours, making transfers smooth and easy.
